Income Tax Calculator
What this calculator does
Estimates your take-home pay after income tax and the Medicare levy, from your gross salary. Handy for checking a job offer, a pay rise, or seeing how salary sacrificing changes your net pay.
Reading the result
Enter your gross annual income and you’ll get your estimated tax, Medicare levy and net income. Australia uses progressive tax brackets, so only the income above each threshold is taxed at the higher rate – a pay rise never leaves you worse off overall.
Example
On a $100,000 salary you’d take home roughly $75,000 to $77,000 after tax and the Medicare levy, depending on offsets. A rise from $100k to $110k is only taxed at the higher rate on that top $10k, not your whole income.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include the Medicare levy? Yes – the standard 2% levy is included. The Medicare Levy Surcharge, which applies to higher earners without private cover, may not be.
What about HECS/HELP or salary packaging? Those change your result and aren’t always captured here. An accountant can model your specific situation.
Are the rates current? The calculator uses current ATO rates, but brackets and offsets change at budget time, so confirm for your income year.
Want to legally pay less tax? A good accountant can structure things properly and often saves more than they cost. See our rankings of the best accountants in Australia.
