Why use an accountant?

Plenty of people lodge a simple tax return themselves through myGov, and that is fine. An accountant starts to earn their fee when things get messier: a rental property, a side business, a company or trust, or a letter from the ATO. The fee for managing your tax affairs is also tax deductible, so you claim it back in next year’s return.

Registered and accountable

Anyone who charges to prepare your tax return or BAS must be registered with the Tax Practitioners Board. You can look any accountant up on the free public register at tpb.gov.au before you hand over your paperwork. A CA, CPA or IPA membership on top means they also answer to a professional body.

More time to lodge

Do it yourself and your return is due on 31 October. Sign up with a registered tax agent before that date and you can often lodge much later, in some cases as late as 15 May the following year.

Money you would miss

Rental deductions, depreciation, work-from-home claims and GST are where DIY returns most often leave money behind or get it wrong. Business owners also get told when switching from sole trader to a company starts to save tax. Fees start from about $109 for a simple return.
